Compaction – we are used to Proctor and “modified proctor”. Tested with sand as example (and found, that vibratory compactor’s 30 seconds is enough to get equal to serie of modified Proctor hammer blows per layer) – but Proctor method is not suitable for larger-grained materials, some gravels and clearly for crushed stones. There better suits the vibratory compactor. Does anyone has ideas and tested the compacting of crushed stones (my interest is on limestone)? Overall target is clear – to measure material’s e-modulus directly in Proctor-mold with Dynatest LWD.

Standard indicates the limits to method – not for fine-grained claysoils, larger side limited – over 40 mm max 10% and over 20 mm max 30%. Thus basically different mixes of 0/31,5 seem to be okey, 0/63 needs to be verified.

Standards on vibratory method – EN 13286-4 speaks about 150 mm Proctor (modified), BS 1377-4 on 100 mm Proctor. Different conditions – weights, powers and timings. Crushed limestone with vibratory cant be compacted equal to standard proctor (as it breaks particles less), and difference is considerable. Seems that for 100 mm mold, 30 sec per layer is OK, but for 150 mm mold 60 sec per layer is required.

LWD on Proctor-mold. Two tested solutions – one by Sadaf, with collar on top of Proctor-mold, another by EST team, with lightweight cylinder to replace 150mm plate-ring under LWD (both options, 100 and 150 mm).
